Berlin : Melt! Weekender

From July 15 to 17 one of Europe’s most interesting mid-sized festivals with Germany’s Melt! returns to of the best festival locations in the world, the iron ghost city that is Ferropolis. And it has already become a tradition to warm up for the big party with various ‘smaller’ events in the months before. For instance, 2011 will see the so-called Melt! Weekender taking over Berlin from this Thursday to Saturday. At Astra ten prestigious acts will play during only three nights.

Thursday offers a current overview on the nowadays’ intersections between sample beats, electronica and hip hop. If you missed Joshua Paul Davis alias DJ Shadow last year at the Melt! main stage (photo above by Christoph Paul) you can now experience him testing his new yet-to-be-released-in-September album live – fifteen after his debut Entroducing….. turned the hip hop world upside down. Support comes from a combination often successfully performed in the UK already: Warp’s Hudson Mohawke and crowd favourite Gold Panda will also fiddle around till ecstasy comes in Berlin. Too, the city’s Jazzanova collective joins for a DJ set.

As experimental but even more diverse is Friday’s line-up: Animal Collective and Planningtorock will already play a together at the Electronic Beats Festival in Cologne the day before, now the US-American psychedelic collective and the identity skewing Berlin solo artist, whose new album W you can pre-listen to at the article’s end, also head to the Melt! Weekender. They are joined by the Palatinate newcomers¬† Sizarr, who actually deserves leaving for a world career afterwards in AC’s travel luggage.

Finally, Saturday is the big club night. Digitalism return with their new album I Love You, Dude, which already got approved by Jens Moeele’s opera singing father and features the duo’s love for cassette mixtapes, Hamburg’s Reeperbahn and, yes, Julian Casablancas of the Strokes. Old hits as “Pogo” and “Zdarlight” should also be played. With WhoMadeWho three old Melt! friends and one the currently best live acts alive bring their new baby Knee Deep on stage, will Azari & III perform as the golden pulse accelerator.

For all nights you can still get one-day passes as well as three-day-ones here. BUT we are also giving away 1×2 last guest invites to Saturday’s night among all comments you leave below until Friday, 2 pm. The winner will be chosen random, so good luck! Competition has already ended – many thanks!
