There will also be a new night programme called Club XBerg at the Arena near the river Spree. (Deutsch) Berlin : Wochenendplaner : Weggeblitzt

03:43 PM

Allerdings gilt beim Finale des Levi’s Print Workshop in der Alten Münze: first come, first serve.

Win : The Magician in Berlin

05:05 PM

Stephen Fasano alias The Magician (photo: Athos Burez) will be in Germany for two days, heating up disco nights first at Munich’s Baby on Thursday and then on Friday at Berlin’s What?!. And all of you can not only listen to his new (and distinctively club-orientated) Magic Tape Thirteen now, but also get the chance to win 2×2 guestlist invites for the event in Berlin. Just leave us a magic comment below. Winners will be chosen random, so good luck!

Today also marks the official release of his remix of Beni’s “It’s A Bubble” (sadly not embedable).

Win : Mort à la Différence : Light Asylum in Berlin

05:23 PM

Events that are programmatically linked to whole utopias are seldom. Leave out the ones aiming on a society with a 24/7 happy party concept or the fully digitally connected mankind and the picture looks even sadder. The highly recommendable Berlin-based blog Expatriarch is now willing to fill the gap, bringing their own manifesto to life outside the online world with new party Mort À La Différence on this Saturday at Chez Jacki. Here well-selected bands and DJs will pursue your preparation for a post-paternalistic world, which has abandoned the idea of a pre-set gender binary – and surely make you dance.

The night’s main act will be the Brooklyn duo Light Asylum (photo), formed by the breathtaking singer Shannon Funchess and her counterpart Bruno Coviello. The music (a highly concentrated dark synthwave) serves as medium for a suppressed creativity and sexuality. And appropriately intense are their gigs, while in their look SM and neon optics melt with sacral imageries. The debut EP In Your Tension was first self-released by them in 2010 and just recently got reissued by Mexican Summer. International institutions as Cold Wave praise Light Asylum, SALEM made a remix and since 2010 Funchess is a permanent part of !!! (chk-chk-chk), while also working with Teengirl Fantasy, Telepathe and TV on the Radio.

The the line-up continues with the girls of Kool Thing, who just recently amazed us with their minimalistic rock as Austra‘s support act at Berghain. At the DJ decks you’ll find Nikolaj Tange Lange and Jemek Jemowit. Joey Hansom, the night’s host and head of Expatriarch, will make even two appearances: first with his new band G-DMOTHER, then also as a DJ. You can listen to a radio mix he made for the event here.

We give away 2×2 guestlist for Mort À La Différence among all comments you leave below. Winners will be chosen random, so good luck everybody!

Live : Melt! Picknick

11:33 AM

Bad news for all yet non-ticketholders: this year’s Melt! Festival (July 15 to 17) is already sold out (only a few and special passes can be bought here according to the festival team). If you still want to experience a great dance at the fantastic festival area of the Ferropolis (or just want to warm-up for the actual festival as planned) you still get the chance to do so on this Sunday. Then the second Melt! Picknick, as the Melt! Weekender an official pre-party for the big summer weekend, will take place near Gräfenhainichen.

This year’s curator is an old friend of Melt! and long-term collaborator. So for instance Alex Ridha alias Boys Noize’ gig with his friend Erol Alkan at Melt! 2009 is still unforgotten. Now the Berlin-based producer and DJ has again invited his British mate plus other well-known acts and creative partners such as Tiga, Djedjotronic and Jan Driver to the former Anhalt open-face mine. Alkan will also bring his New Zealand Phantasy label artist Connan Mockasin with, who’s one of the last real weirdos in the game and the creator of the beautifully pop music re-creating Please Turn Me Into The Snat. In terms of stylistic diversity he can also compete with Nottingham’s Lone, although the latter is rather coming from the electronic corner of modern music.

Torpedo in Berlin

08:36 PM

What would you do if you were a successful musician and didn’t know what to do with your creativity? Right. You found another new band. As done by Pontus Levahn. In 2004 the drummer of Tiger Lou founded Torpedo together with the band’s bassist Erik Welén.

As “Kraftwerk with a heart” – how they consider themselves – Torpedo revive the sound of the 80’s but without loosing the connection to their indie roots. In 2008 the Swedes released their debut In The Assembly Line, an already very ripe and profound longplayer, which they took on tour for their first headliner gigs. In April 2011 their second LP We followed. On this one you can find the current single “Waiting For The Fall” with the associated video ,which is a piece of art as well: dark, apocalyptical and just beautiful.

On June 3 Torpedo are coming to Berlin to play at the Levee Club. We are giving away 3×2 free tickets für the gig. Just leave a comment below to get your chance.

Live : Austra

05:11 PM

First she dedicated her talent to punk music with Galaxy, then she put well-known pop songs into morbid new clothes as a solo artist. With her new project Austra Canada’s Stelmanis is now making not less dark interface music between modern acts as Zola Jesus (Interview) and the first yet by Joe Godard produced Little Boots songs (Austras “Beat And Pulse” vs. “Stuck On Repeat” by the latter). The result sounds highly dramatical, sombre and likewise emotive, sometimes even aesthetically marginal, but in contrast to acts like White Lies you’ll never see or hear Austra on the border’s wrong side.

The compositions by Stelmanis’ band partner Maya Postepski are catchy, the voice of the classical trained singer is distinctive again, while bassist Dorian Wolf is doing a solid job. That the two of the female musicians are gay and openly proclaiming that, might help the band attracting some more attention as well, although Stelmanis states: I am a musician first, and a lesbian second. With “Lose It” (video below) there’s also a great and pure hit in their portfolio.

Austra’s debut album Feel It Break was released by Domino. Currently the band’s touring through Europe with Tasseomancy – find all dates at the end.

Berlin: Heineken Green Sphere (win)

01:30 PM

The location bears the probably most beautiful name in town (Insel der Jugend, isle of youth), the dominant colour is the one of hope (green) and the line-up is a fine and well-selected one. With the Heineken Green Sphere Berlin’s Spree riverside in Treptow will see a fountain of youth manifesting itself in a small Sunday’s openair.
Playing their for now only German gig, Island quintet FM Belfast (photo) will headline the event. It’s feisty cliché-free electro pop they play, which will already go for a second round on June 3 with the release of new full-length Don’t Want To Sleep on Morr. The first impressions embedded below, “I Don’t Want To Go To Sleep Either” (video) and “New Year” (download), turn out be respectively enthusiastic. (And if you need to be convinced by the band’s live qualities first, there’s also a complete and exuberant video recording of a gig, they did earlier this year.)
A diverse DJ support comes from UK band Foals, the always busy Berlin scene eclectics Hunee (Hunch Music, Rush Hour, Permanent Vacation, Ostgut Ton, …) and Hugo Capablanca (Bananamania, Broken Hearts Club, Los Massieras) plus Remmidemmi.

You can register for the event on their website or just win 1×2 guestlist invites here, by being at least 18 years old and leaving us a green comment below! The winner will be chosen by our green thumb random, so good luck!
