HEALTH played a new song at Incubate

HEALTH toured Europe once again in the recent days, playing festival shows at Berlin Festival on Friday, among others. At yesterday’s final show at Dutch Incubate Festival a premier took place: the noise-electronic-rock act performed a new, yet unnamed song (watch the video below). Suddenly, there’s a melody not getting corroded or deconstructed. If you remember, that the other three members of the band didn’t even understand what singer Jake Duzsik was singing about, when their debut album was recorded in 2007, you might, but really only might, consider this track as “pop”, in the context of the previous HEALTH workings of course. Musically the new piece definitely tied to “USA Boys“. The excitement bar for their third and upcoming album,  the successor of Get Color does rise anyway.

Liars : Interview

While actually every interview or simple talk should be a dynamic one, our meeting with US-three-piece Liars, who returned from the cement juggernaut Los Angeles with the literally overwhelming album Sisterworld earlier this, is it in an even double way. So when right middle of a hot Berlin May day Julian Gross proves himself as distinctly serious and sometimes impatient, and Aaron Hemphill guitar tuningly takes the part of a questioning, intellectual sidekick, Angus Andrews’ oral fluency and tempo increases with every minute – probably thanks to the just smoked pipe. Maybe he needed to assimilate the small horrors of the journey, since – according to Gross – passing a burning car among other things on the agonizingly slow trip from Munich to the German capital. Traffic jams inclusive.

I guess you have a seventh sense for unlucky events to take place whenever and wherever you are around.
ANGUS ANDREW: Yeah, we’ve been around whenever and wherever the terrorist attacks occured. We were in London when these one happened (2005), Aaron was in New York City on 9/11 (2001).
JG: And in Bilbao. Either desaster follows us or we are terrorists. Is it a coincidence? Who knows? I don’t.

Another coincidence completing the puzzle was that your current album Sisterworld leaked on Christmas eve.
JG: I guess, this should tell us, that it’s a good Christian record.
AA: Anyway, it didn’t ruin the celebrations. I was in Australia with my family and it just did make me forget everything else even more.

2010 marks the 10th anniversary of Liars…
[a little discussion about when to start counting years and how evolves]
AA: … we are just happy to be doing what we are doing, anyway.

Pavement, who are currently touring again, did originally split up around that point time of their carreer. Have you ever thought about making the same move already?
AA:  Not really. Pavement asked us to go on tour with them. That’s the only real connection I can think of.
AARON HEMPHILL: Unfortunately, there’s no musical inspiration we draw from Pavement. Maybe there is some listeners can make, but that’s their freedom.
JG: Also Pavement’s music didn’t really change much, did it? We are different. We don’t want to do the same thing all the time. We get ourselves a little bit more freedom.

So you think it’s foreclosed to happen to you as well for now?
JG: In like 60 years maybe.
AA: It’s hard to tell what ever happens in the future.
AH: Anything can happen.

Like Pavement – people over the time started to refer to you as an influential band.
AA: That is something, which is totally beyond us. We never get involved into such conversations.
AH: I think, the concept of an ‘influential band’ as a title rather than a entity is a another catch phrase generated by rock media – like a ‘scene’. So if a band is accepts this title, this journalistic term, it’s a kind of quitting. It’s some sort of sign for stagnation.

But isn’t this term also expressing, that other people have discovered a different, unknown approach towards music through your work?
AH: That’s possible. I just think, that our music is generous, because we put everything we have into our music, and I hope, that people think about it. And if that means for them to discover a new kind of music, it’s an amazing outcome. But we would never say, we are influential. I’ve heard bands taking credits for other people’s music and that’s sickening. As much as I like the Velvet Underground, if they wouldn’t have been the Velvet Underground, someone else would have done their music. So whenever you’re gardening the corpse of influence, it means, that there’s nothing left to give. It’s like being a corpse in the desert and shout: “Hey, I was dead first!”, when a vulture passes your for some fresh killing.

That again implies, that you take away the key element of art by stripping it from its context. It would become meaningless, since it wouldn’t need the Liars to produce an album like Sisterworld. Someone else would just do it at some other time.
AH: Sure. But it does make appreciate the moment and celebrate the reference even more.
AA: Good art isn’t about other artists influences on someone. It’s about a lot more influential things, than just looking on other people’s art. Our music is not influenced by other music, but by what we are thinking.


One of those bands, whose often linked to Liars are everyone’s Westcoast noise darlings HEALTH (photo aboce).  And they seem to reverently contain themselves in tonight’s support slot. Despite spinning like dervishs through the stage smoke, one can feel the steady presence of the immense, ongoing tour stint. To some extent they appear to be a bit burned out for the first time. Thus, the fact that even an average HEALTH gig outshines a good show by almost every other band helps us to get over it easily.

But Liars aren’t just any other band. They are far more, taking over the scenery of their old parlour Berlin aggressively and trenchantly. Like a wave against the the surf, they are constantly throwing their sonic selves against the audience, just to fall back and rise soon again even heavier.

You have lived in Berlin around the time of recording Drum’s Not Dead. Returning to your old exile once again, how do you think the city has changed?
JG: Oh, we haven’t seen that much yet, since we directly drove to the venue. There’s still a lot of construction work. The rave scene is still bigger than everywhere else in Europe, which is a good thing. I have grown up with that one.
AA: Nothing has changed – how about this as an answer?
AH: Yeah, that’s getting pretty close to it, I guess.

I think, it has grown up a bit.
AH: But that’s like New York. People said about their area, “I have moved here before every other white person, when it was still dangerous”, and we are saying this to the people moving in as well. In that regard, nothing has changed. Change is the constant.

You did a very impressive video together with Andy Bruntel for “Scissor”, in which Angus is in a life boat and gets attacked by stones out of the nowhere. This somehow reminded me about all the angry kids throwing stones against stores and police men in European countries like Greece.
AA: We don’t know too much about this and the video wasn’t inspired by that. But we appreciate every politics that stands up for the right of the individual and it seems, that this protest is going on almost every day. This is definitely a good thing, always a good protest.

And what is a good protest ideally leading to for you?
AA: To a commons sense of the egalitarian right of the individual, it’s a really strong sense. There’s always this fear of a group mentality and the fight for the underdog.

Sounds like the modern Tea Party movement.
AA: Well, they aren’t the underdog. But that again is whole different form of politics and protesting. The people protesting there have a lot more people than the ones I was talking about.

Anything left to say?
JG: I like hot tea more, than I like cold tea.

What’s your favourite?
JG: Caramel.
AH: I don’t trink tea, but do you know, that historians link the historical Boston Tea Party to why Americans drink less tea than other countries? I mean, I do not not drink tea, because I feel a sort of resonance to my American heritage – I just don’t like it. Although I’m half Chinese, which makes it a bit weird.
AA: I try to drink a lot of tea. I like Earl Grey, but on tour it’s often green tea.
AH: If I had to pick one sort, then it would be white tea – because of my Chinese heritage.
AA: My mum was born in Sri Lanka and so my parents visited a tea plantation there once and it’s interesting to think about, how tea made the world become, what it is today.
AH: Tea and coffee literally saved Great Britian. There was a time, when they only drank ale and beer, which is another they to destill their water. So everyone was drinking alcohol until coffee and tea came over and people started drinking pure water again.

Tonight Angus Andrew will spin some records at London’s Alibi (together with Charlie of Dummy and more) – find an entire mix he recently made over at the Quietus. Then, from Thursday on, the band will tour the United Kingdom – see all four dates after HRISTOPH PAULS’ photos of the Berlin gig below. Their fifth studio album Sisterworld and the current single Proud Evolution – including a Thom Yorke remix – got both released by Mute. A recommendation to buy shall hereby be pronounced. Amen.

HEALTH : USA Boys (MF/MB/ Remix)

Earlier today Swedish Adrian Recordings label send out a new remix by fellow band MF/MB/ of HEALTH‘s recent single “USA Boys”. And to be honest, it still leaves us a bit puzzled. Since in a way, it does sound like the hybrid of  the typical Ed Banger and Audiolith pow-pow and German funfair techno Schlager, probably on the bumper car ride – weirdly enough that’s mainly because of the actually capital synthesizer tracks in the original song. Thus, we can’t really escape from this.

For now only the knowledge calms us, that the issue with MF/MB/’s own work and the remix craft of Jesper Aubin looks much clearer; particularly in positive way.

If HEALTH would a football player we would reverently attest them to have an horse’s lung (which is what we Germans do, when we describe someone’s great stamina). By now we’ve already lost the overview on the number of European tour’s this band has so far played in only a few years, but we know, that it starts today and it’ll be last of the sci-fi rowdies before they start working on their and third album.

This time their journey will take them in a long sickle’s bow from Moscow to Instanbul with stop-bys in the UK, Denmark, France and the Benelux states, in which they’ll support Crystal Castles, a well-known group, with who the band’s is pretty close-knit since a successful (remix) joint venture named “Crimewave” – as far as this Canadian social phobics have ever been close-knit with anyone. Too, there will be a few solo shows.

Alice Glass and Ethan Kath will also continue touring after HEALTH leave back to the US in November, playing f.i. four dates in Germany. Then one can once again watch this project so splendidly winding between 8-bit cacophonies and thick sound combs, screaming fits and angle harmonies. Surely with the usual, self-brought flash flurry.

Melt! Festival 2010

As already in the year of  2009 we presented you the most important and current information directly from the Melt!-Festival. 2010 the line up also promised a lot of good music and fulfilled all expectations and even more than that.  From punk sounds with Fucked Up or The Big Pink to electronic music à la Hercules and Love Affair and DJ Shadow the weekend was rich of musical highlights. Melt! Liveblog: Der Samstag

Hello again! After our first live blog in 2009 we are finally back at the fantastic Melt! Festival to cover the 13th issue as it happens – including photos (by Christoph Paul) and some first impressions (by Thomas Vorreyer).

Sunday, 16:40: The end is near … After it’s implementation in 2008, the third issue of festival day number three, the Sunday, invites us to a smaller (three instead of five stages) but even denser cast day. While Kings of Convenience are currently stroking their strings behind us, the Post War Years, Fucked Up, Crookers, WhoMadeWho, Slagmalsklubben and of course Goldfrapp and festival headliner Massive Attack are getting ready to hit the stages over the day and night.

Alas, we got a bit kept away from the blog yesterday because of interviews and more. So here’s eventually our review of the complete Saturday:

Despite of the mild weather the day kicked off quite slowly and turned out to don’t enjoy as much as highlights as the Friday before. Although, our dear Friendly Fires, who told us their gig at Melt! 2008 during the rain and storm mayhem was their first ever, played one of the by far best shows of the entire weekend. The band machine appeared to be very well oiled by now and the crowd cheered them, waving and dancing as one. During the new song “Running Away” even transformed-to-balloons condomes danced over our heads – interview follows soon. Of course, the dance-rock of Holy Ghost was lenient in comparison, while Hurts suprisingly well filled the light, late afternoon slot between these two on the Gemini stage with the usual big-gesture pop grandezza.

In the meantime the main stage got covered in some rougher sounds: Blood Red Shoes stormed powerfully, but solid as always through their set and Dendemann demonstrated the numerous international guests, that in Germany intelligent and brave hip-hop and mullet cuts can indeed go hand in hand. Parallel to this Darwin Deez stole their hearts of the younger crowd in the Intro tent, before The Big Pink entered it to blow the not fully filled tent away. But yet their grandiloquent guitar-synthie rock may would have fit the man stage better then the bit dry Jamie T did – interview follows.

Next: dance attack! Soul-pop singer Jamie Lidell, DJ Shadow, Sinden and German band Die Sterne played live parallel to each other. And it might hasn’t been a knockout victory, but a clear one by scores for Lidell, who thus had best sound at the Gemini. Here then Hercules and Love Affair took over the mic and beats with an almost all-new set basing on their new, yet-unreleased, second album. Sadly, the new line-up and their stringently chruny Chicago-to-Detroit oldschool mix, including the even sphericly re-arranged old hits “Blind” and “You Belong”, were a bit too many news for the crowd and the set undeservedly did not enflame everyone fully. Still, they all stayed at the stage to get loose of their coresponding dance reserves at Chromeo, who turned their gig with some nice audio and visual show extras into a really good on, before the DJs A-Trak, Tiga, Carl Craig and of course German tiro Moderat (Fotos) took over the direction for the rest of the night.

Saturday, 16:00: The Melt! Saturday has just begun and while we are looking forward to the likes of Jamaica, Holy Ghost!, Darwin Deez, Maskinen, Hercules and Love Affair, Chromeo, Tiefschwarz and Hurts (and to interview Friendly Fires and the Big Pink), let’s have a short and final retrograd look on Friday night. After Jónsi some strange sitar sounds led us to Yeasayer, where Chris Keating showed up with a vocal performance with all the sexiness and extravaganza immediately reminding us of Prince and, yes somehow, Michael Jackson in their greater days. One haven’t seen and heard such thing in  quite a long time and would have perfectly fit on the big main stage, where The XX were facing the mammoth task to present their intimate and minimalistic compositions within such a great frame. Apparently, they did it master it well. Key role was taken over by Jamie once again, who was enthroned behind a great, white X on black ground and a laser light roof drawn over the Ferropolis. He not only did rearranged the band’s songs but relined them with some heavy beats. And who watched Oliver trying out some unexpected, standard rock bassist moves, can may predicted the possible new direction this band will take from now on. Who, who already did follow this electronic path on his own, is Kele Okereke off Bloc Party. While his muscle-bound body satisfied completely, his set did only partly considering quite a few lengths in it. Too, not totally convincing where Foals, who played a – compared to their own benchmark – just average set despite a very driven Yannis Philippakis. Headling their own day stage at beach Modeselektor then didn’t reach the maximum as well, although guest appearances by Bonaparte promised a lot more action. Alas, it turned out to be just the addition, but not the desired multiplication of their forces. But still there was a 100% great end with the energetic live set of autoKratz in the Intro tent.

Friday, 23:32: Another round of diverse gigs lies behind us. We smiled at all the adolescence in the front row of Two Door Cinema Club, left the stage to dance to a brilliant dubstep-electro DJ set by Jamie XX at the beach (!) and got pulled away to the main stage again by our German heroes Tocotronic. Here, Dirk von Lowtzow almost enthusiastically greeted the crowd and praised the resistance once again and just for fun, while Rick Mc Phail was miming a modern god of guitar. This spectacle got followed by a delicious visual sandwich: a blue flash light orgy and loads of cheesiness by Delphic, lightening and thunder at HEALTH, who fantastically re-structured “Crimewave” into a new, even bigger version, and finally Jónsi, whose great, but complex and intimate setting and show was maybe ab bit too intimate for the big main stage and the oval in front of it. Now we are looking forward to Yeasayer, Four Tet, The XX, Kele, Foals, autoKratz, Modeselektor ft. Bonaparte and many others.

Friday, 20:36: Words race with drops of sweat towards the keyboard – this Melt! Festival has already crossed its melting point. It’ sunny and super hot here and after the Audiolith Pferdemarkt yesterday at the festival side and the Introducing party in Berlin (photos below) Bonaparte and Midlake could finally open the big party to everyone, while the Big Wheel Stage was surrounded by a sweating mass covered in dust and seduced by the fine tunes of Oliver Koletzki. Then – parallel to Ja, Panik and Pantha du Prince – Sweden’s finest, the Shout Out Louds, hit the stage. Too bad they prepared an undercooled set to fight the heat. But they were some highlights still: the undestroyable beauty of “Impossible” for instance or their short cover of “Walking Like an Egyptian”, which now stands in a line with “Train in Vain” from their 2007er Melt! appearance. Now Two Door Cinema Club, Jamie XX and Tocotronic are about to begin. Looks like everyone reached working temperature immediately.

USA boys and girls: After their little splatter team-up with Eric Wareheim (for the “We Are Water” video), HEALTH‘s very own John Familglietti (who already directed “Die Slow“) is back in the game. Setting the preview single “USA Boys” of the band’s second, upcoming remix album Disco2 (German release: 25.06. / US: 23.06.) in motion, the multi-talented bassist once again cites his two favourite subjects: destruction and sex, thus, this time it’s monogamous, to be fair. The video is sound tracked by one of the best songs anno 2010 of course.

Sensory overload á la HEALTH: We’ve never heard our favourite L.A. rockers like this! And by that we mean electronic, trance-like and not genuine, but almost danceable! We have the new, surprising single “USA Boys” of the band and one might could have rapped over its instrumental, but instead Jake’s voice is other-worldly floating afar from every aggression over it.

The whole piece got recorded at NIN mastermind Trent Reznor’s home studio and mixed by legendary Alan Moulder (the producer of U2’s Pop as well as of the Jesus and the Mary Chain, the very same Nine Inch Nails and Smashing Pumpkins). And it was worth it!

HEALTH ‘Disco2′ out in June

It has been an open secret for quite a while now but today the dear City Slang confirmed that HEALTH will release the second issue of their ‘remix disco series’ with Disco2 this summer. The LP will of course feature numerous remixes of tracks from the band’s last year’s stunning Get Color album and with CFCF and Pictureplane to remixers from the first HEALTH/DISCO LP are on board again joining a list of some of the hottest rising talents across the globe including Small Black, Javelin (both Brooklyn-NYC), the fantastic and mysterious Salem, British electronic favourite Gold Panda and Tobacco (Tom Fec from Black Moth Super Rainbow) among others.

Too, HEALTH got not only together with the infamous Crystal Castles for another remix (of “Eat Flesh”) after the surprising success of the CC’s Crimewave-re-edit, but went to studio with legendary producer Alan Moulder, who produced U2’s Pop as well as albums for the likes of Jesus and the Mary Chain, Nine Inch Nails and Smashing Pumpkins. For someone, whose visual repertoire includes public French kiss orgies, laser blasting, hairy moobs and facially morphed plus-size cheerleader motorcycle gangs, a video with a classic splatter movie chase almost seems like a backslide to his personal Biedermeier, if only almost. After much-noticed, controversial videos for Depeche Mode, Major Lazer and Flying Lotus, US-American comedian (one half of Tim and Eric) and director Eric Wareheim has now worked with his effect-buddies Fatal Farm again, to create another piece of art for the (perhaps) best song of HEALTH‘s current second full-length Get Color, the terrificly destructive and mighty “We Are Water”. While he may abandons his typical humor here, he’s still included another surprising Wareheimian turn in this morbid, shocking chase of the young Lolita and her brutal slaughterer through a dark wood with almost ash-like falling snow.

Too, check the prior HEALTH video for “Die Slow” done by the band themselves and download a fine Azaari & II remix of “We Are Water”. And you can let the band beat both songs into your eardrums on their upcoming European tour soon as well!
