Berlin: Heineken Green Sphere (win)

01:30 PM

The location bears the probably most beautiful name in town (Insel der Jugend, isle of youth), the dominant colour is the one of hope (green) and the line-up is a fine and well-selected one. With the Heineken Green Sphere Berlin’s Spree riverside in Treptow will see a fountain of youth manifesting itself in a small Sunday’s openair.
Playing their for now only German gig, Island quintet FM Belfast (photo) will headline the event. It’s feisty cliché-free electro pop they play, which will already go for a second round on June 3 with the release of new full-length Don’t Want To Sleep on Morr. The first impressions embedded below, “I Don’t Want To Go To Sleep Either” (video) and “New Year” (download), turn out be respectively enthusiastic. (And if you need to be convinced by the band’s live qualities first, there’s also a complete and exuberant video recording of a gig, they did earlier this year.)
A diverse DJ support comes from UK band Foals, the always busy Berlin scene eclectics Hunee (Hunch Music, Rush Hour, Permanent Vacation, Ostgut Ton, …) and Hugo Capablanca (Bananamania, Broken Hearts Club, Los Massieras) plus Remmidemmi.

You can register for the event on their website or just win 1×2 guestlist invites here, by being at least 18 years old and leaving us a green comment below! The winner will be chosen by our green thumb random, so good luck!

Weekend guide : April Fool

05:51 PM

Berlin: Tomorrow is the first of April but we are still damn serious with the following night-out recommendations!

Rafael Fauria and Honey Owens musical view originates from psychedelia. Now, as masterminds behind Miracles Club, the produce some flamboyant piano-acid house, reminding you of the great era of the The Haçienda and Manchester Rave (and so many other great times). For the first ever Heartbeat at Chez Jacki the band now travels all the way from US to Berlin, where the party hosts let JD Twitch of Optimo Espacio, a real master of genre mixes, join them. DJ Preston G. Parallax of 20 Jazz Funk Greats and Buenos-Aires-Berlin band Mueran Humanos make the slightly darker counterpart. It’s a great mixture!

The Miracles Club : A New Love

Mueran Humanos : Cosmeticos Para Cristo

Furthermore: SPEX online editor and author wwwacht celebrates his farewell from the magazine with a tasteful collection of the last four years and a half at Monarch from 10 pm on.

With all the recent global catastrophes, Berghain invites you to a charity night for Ärzte ohne Grenzen (Médecins Sans Frontières) at Panoramabar. Among others Steffi, Nick Höppner, Ellen Allien and Tom Clark will deejay, Henrik Schwarz plays live.

ULTERIOR finally released their debut album. And of course Germany shall get a live taste of Wild In Wildlife, so the elemental force returns to Berlin: Hidden Treasure brings the Londoners with Ditto Destroyer to NBI. Watch the brand new video for “Big City Black Rain”, a common homage with the Turrell brothers to London, above and read our review from the band’s last show in town here.

Furthermore: Admittedly suspicious sources as Zane Lowe and the NME see Brother as the heralds of another real britpop rival, only this time called gritpop. You can find out, whether this is good or bad news at Whip It Good at Magnet Club. At least, singer Leonard Newell seems to be busy studying the Ashcrofts and Gallaghers of this world.

It’s the first of April, but zero” already invite you to their summercamp. RNDM of Dial, Carlos de Brito and the house-own Philly and Koko will celebrate with your at Schönwetter.

The only event with today’s appropriate humour should be A Små FIASKO (click the link for the door code) at Ritterstr. 11. It’s a super ironic charity event for all the scene girls & boys whose scene neighbourhood is getting taken over by hipster crowds. Schowi (Yum Yum), Dot Con (de:bug) and Sascha Robotti of Robosonic want to see you laughing and dancing.

Acid Pauli and Dixon can be seen at Watergate.

Wolfram Eckert, former Diskokaine, now short Wolfram, is likely to take over the world’s best disco clubs very soon: His debut album Wolfram is out on Friday via Permanent Vacation and welcomes  guests as Haddaway, Holy Ghost!, Patrick Pulsinger, Sally Shapiro, Legowelt and SebastiAn on heavenly productions. Also his bosomfriend Andy Butler of Hercules and Love Affair contributed to the album’s first single, the magnificent “Fireworks”.

Now there’s a release party at Picknick, where Wolfram will be framed by DJ Hell, Kaos, Paul Mogg, Hugo Capablanca, Nomad…  or shall we just write: covered in the cream of the scene? With redhead Andy Butler as the cherry on top? It should get rather crowded anyway.

Wolfram ft. Hercules & Love Affair : Fireworks

Hercules & Love Affair : Painted Eyes (Wolfram Remix)

Furthermore: Norwegian pop, of course from Bergen: The New Wine live at Festsaal Kreuzberg – with Sweeden’s Degrees and DJ-sets by Karrera Klub and Nordic By Nature.

With Daemon (watch the title-track’s video here) Kenton Slash Demon finishes his 12″ trilogy on Monday (following Matter and Sun) – all perfectly visualised by Dark Matters. This needs a proper celebration and he takes over the Waterfloor at Watergates, while Wolf + Lamb vs. Soul Clap play a tight set themselves above. Hot!

Offcase starring Paris Suit Yourself live plus M.E.S.H., Felisa Isabel Funes and Dj Glamcanyon. The dance takes place at Chez Jacki.

daniel rajkovic & exercise one play rockabilly, post punk, new wave and industrial.

Berlin: Fashionweek Partyguide 2011

06:30 PM

Once more enjoying the additional cultural adventures around the tam-tam of colour, cut and style? Count us in! And while we list you all the decent events of the week below, we of course want to guide you to the dear following sites for more professional views and critics on actual fashion and textiles: DERZEIT, Flannel Apparel, iHeartBerlin, i-ref, Les Mads, and Stil in Berlin – inform yourselves!

City Slang’s new band Wye Oak is presenting its third and new album Civilian for free and intimately at the Michelbergerhotel; ideally it will sound like this (and that should be really good) – 7.30 pm

At .HBC weekly event series Cinema will turn into the official Fashion Week Opening Party of DERZEIT with the charming host trios of Glamcanyon, Svenster and Elizafoxx welcoming guest-DJs Bonnie Strange and Willy Wonka – 10 pm

But cherished and praised DJ Hugo Capablanca will head to Torstraße to spin some tunes at Neue Odessa Bar instead.

And since rock music is always… er… totally in, the list wouldn’t be complete without JEFF the Brotherhood. Eventually as a guitar-drummer duo the Orrall brothers have exactly the perfect size for West Germany’s small and shaky tage – 9 pm (doors)

From today to Sunday Civilist at Brunnenstrasse 13 offers you a space to relax from the fashion trouble and warm-up for the night with the DJs of keinemusik – every day from 5 to 10 pm

The Projekt Galerie invites everyone to their own FW opening party at .HBC and the Blind Date Swingers Club is among the cooperation partners – 7 pm, free entrance

The Whitest Boy Alive play a little gig at Festsaal Kreuzberg, but apparently that’s too small and hence already sold out. You should still find some tickets, though – 10 pm (start)

Los Massieras will appear live at the Bread & Butter stand of Diesel around 8 pm, afterwards it’s then time for Banamania at the King Size Bar, where T.Keeler and Valentino will join.

This beautiful women has an as beautiful voice, too, and will present her debut album not on the catwalk, but at KulturKaufhaus Dussmann: British newcomer Anna Calvin plays a free gig – 7 pm

Nhan Solo, Ante Perry, Acidkid Daniel Dexter and Giampiero will deejay for WeSC  at the nhow-Hotel at Stralauer Allee; free entrance – 10 pm

Live act Return To Zero plus DJs Emile Doesn’t Drive and Franz Scala at Soju Bar- 11 pm

Friday night is concert night and there’s no better event than Introducing at Magnet: With Crystal Fighters (the beautiful people from above) and Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs there’s not only one of the best live acts we know, but also one of our most cherished and talented young producers on the bill. Furthermore there will be the also British Minnaars plus DJ sets by Karrera Klub and Trashpop – 1o pm

The Sounds have the charming Maja Ivarsson as singer and with Crossing The Rubicon a quite good album. You can watch both live in action together with label colleagues The Blood Arm and Eight Legs at Snowhite Music Night at Postbahnhof auf – 10 pm (start)

Villa will party the extraordinary amount of three days and nights through. Sadly, that’s not for a nice reason, since the terrain will be sold to build some new mall, hipster estate or whatever. Of course that needs a few more acts to fill the weekend and you can find them ALL here. Among others, the dear Tricus & Gold, Jake the Rapper, Funkenstrøm, die Gebrüder Teichmann feat. Raumagent, Oliver $, Shir Khan, David Dorad, Das Christl, Robosonic, Basteroid, DJ Wool, Der E-Kreisel, Full Nelson, Mutlu, Leo Diamond will be among them, so it’s going to be dancing with old friends and tears in one’s eyes (Hi, Ultravox!).

Ed Banger boss Busy P and Hugo Capablanca will deejay for Marshall Headphones at the Weinmeister Hotel – 7 pm; invite only (Write Hugo a kind mail!)

Capablanca can also been seen behind the decks of the Illusion Institute at Bar Tausend with Christian d’Or (the “disco prince of Denmark”) later that night.

Achtung magazine and Get Physical await you together with Patrick Bodmer of M.A.N.D.Y., Fetisch & Kaos, Siopis, Niki Paul of the Broken Hearts Club and no less than professional fashion provacteur  and semi-professional DJ Patrick Mohr at Cookies – 11 pm

Baris K : First Turkish-Disco set in Berlin

02:34 PM

Wow, that was one long flyer … but we are glad that you’ve made all the way up to here, so we can tell you, that Hugo Capablanca and his Bananamania label in cooperation with Berlin-Mitte club Picknick managed to bring Baris K, the king of Bosporus disco, over to Berlin for the very first time on Saturday, September 4. Following his early 2010 mixtape on the label’s blog and his own Eurasia mixes, the resident of the came-to-life merge of Orient and Occident that is the Turkish capital Istanbul now aims to introduce various rarities of the Anatolian music scene, which has been almost autarkic of the Western pop world until the late 1980ies, to the German crowd.

Vigorous DJ and live support comes from Hugo Capablanca himself, old friend and collaborator T. Keeler, Australia’s very own Mc Gaff E, the Berliners Okay&Okay and Joey Hansom, and finally, Hugo’s side project and tonight’s special guests, Los Massieras.. So music lovers bored by the everyday club routine shouldn’t miss this special night.

Berlin: Fashion Week Party Guide

05:23 PM

This week, everything in our beloved Berlin will be about the Fashion Week and the various parallel events like the Bread & Butter, the BRIGHT Tradeshow or the Wedding Dress #5, which will turn the city into one big, stylish mess. And of course all the models want to shake their beautiful hips and all the fashion journalists and bloggers want to loosen their stressed bottoms. No wonder, that there will be loads of great parties – and we have them listed for you below. For instance, the always well-dressed and pictured above Hundreds have turned their music into clothings and will play live at Roter Salon this Thursday.

PS: If you’re looking for well-articulated and -photographed impressions for the sheer fashion events, please, have a look on the sites of  DERZEIT, iHeartBerlin, i-ref, Stil in Berlin, Les Mads, who have already featured a list of all public fashion shows here, and Teresa Buecker’s Flannel Apparel.

The week will see its kick-off at Stadtbad Wedding with the FASHION WHAAAT!, including a public vernissage of the showroom mile at 6 pm and the subsequent drop-dead gorgeous party from 9 pm on, where a live set by French band Gachette of the Mastiff will be accompanied by a big DJ-line-up featuring (or favourite) Hugo Capablanca and the duo The Marvin & Valentino of Munich’s top club Erste Liga plus EM//E ( Tilt! ), Hagen B (2nd Berlin Skool ), Squim (Gruppenzwang ), Alpha Nerd ( Sellfish ) and Bronkovic.

Another opening party will take place at the projektGalerie: A gig by The Polyamorous Affair, a Crystalmafia DJ-set and a designer night sale will mark the begin of five days riddled with show rooms and fashion presentations.

In addition, Dial Records (label website) will celebrate an own label night with Carsten Jost and a special guest at Cookies.

French magazine Numéro and Le Salon de Paris invite everyone to Bar Tausend, who’ll be exoticly enough dressed (yes, there will be a dresscode) to party with Parus and the DJs Emile Doesn’t Drive, Nite Shinin* and Dimitri into a hot (hot) HEAT night.

Without any fashion link, but with Portland’s tremendous duo Y?CHT and another Get Wavey party – this time with top-class electro task force Egyptrixx and Finckobot – Magnet does offer you a big, sweaty nightout.

Tonight the Frenchmen will take over Picknick. The WAD team has put together a last Very Good Trip at the Mitte club, which looks like the best party of the entire week. Thibaut Berland alias Ed Banger’s Breakbot will headline the whole night and surely perform his super-hit “Baby I’m Yours” (see video here) together with the too-present Irfane. The blue-white-red quartet will be completed by our mysterious friends Acid Washed (see interview here) and Digikid84, who’ll bring his über funk track “Supernature Love” with him. The tasty and tight electro line-up gets a fine disco house dessert by Hugo Capablanca and Diskokaine.

In the meanwhile the BRIGHT trade show will open its doors at Torstraße 116 (until Saturday) and is alluring you not only with various fashion presentations from the street- and skatewear scene, but with a opening party under the musically direction of  Karl-Oskar (Wood Wood), the Rollerboys, Bianca Checker (Positive Inc), Dirk Bonn and Ingrid of Broken Hearts Club, while the artistic likes of Leif Podhajsky, Jon D. Sanders & Ben Ross and Nomad will exhibit their visual works.

Too, Swedish trendsetter label WeSC (at BRIGHT as well) is throwing a party at Voltaire5 (Ex-Dice) to celebrate with their label friends Mademoiselle Yulia and Nhan Solo (see the funny video of his new single “Fortune Cookie” here) plus the guest DJs Schowi (Yum Yum), DJ75, Giampero, Creathief and superstar songwriter Taan Newjam. [via]

Another party will take place at Cookies, where  ICC and Clash magazine present a night with Artic Monkey and P-Diddy-buddy Matt Helders, the Fanklub Deejays, Dizzy Wizzy and star DJ A-Trak.

Last but not least a quite interesting, audiovisual alloy will get introduced at Roten Salon: The fashion label trikoton (not connected to the music label Trikont) set themselves to transmit music and sound into clothings, using generative designs and interactive, manifacturing prodction processes. Thereby an elegant necktie was created from the song “Happy Virus” of the Hamburg sibiling duo Hundreds as part of an entire limited band edition. For this occasion Eva and Philipp Milner, who made one of the best German releases of 2010 so far with their untitled, Sinnbus debut album, will now play live in Berlin – see an impressive live video of the band here. There will be an aftershow by Remmidemmi.

For a dancy Swiss fashion happening Villa will exclusively open its doors during the summer break. Besides various label presentations by our Southern neighbours, Alpine DJ-sets by Awesome’s Tricus & Vitéz, Sick Sinus, one Schlechtboy and Team Rainbow plus Marvin Hey from Zurich and the two Berliners-of-choice Elizafoxxx und Suz Suzs will guide you through the night, which will be called Models die young – so please appear in appropiate mourning dresses.

And there will be a special night by Hugo Capablanca at the Bar Tausend: Not only is he launching his new collaboration with the make-up label Uslu Airlines, the exclusive nail polish “HUG” (expect some cool banana yellow), but his saying  ‘Adiós!’ to his regulary Friday night Tausenddisco after two successful years. With him, Mans of Rollerboys, Diskokaine and a still secret act from New York will celebrate a grandezza of a farewell.

The official Patrick Mohr aftershow party will be hosted by the Get Physical label at Cookies. And DJ T, Catz’n’Dogz und Evan Baggs & Martin Rung plus Daniel Wang really do make a great line-up for a good dance at Friedrichstraße.

A good warm-up for the whole evening might be the release party of only20 (!) exclusive G-Shock watches from 6 pm on at Mulackstraße.

The end is near:  F I N is already called a ‘closing party’ for the stylish days, but visual presentations from the fashion fundus of DERZEIT and high-quality disco DJ-sets mixed by the hands of Moustache Mamas, Hugo Capablanca, Nomad, Team Rainbow and Elizafoxxx indeed look like a worthy farewell.

Parellel, DJ Hell and Fetisch will enter Cookies, presented by Achtung magazine.

Too, the green fashion convention TheKey.To – Acceleration will close with a party featuring Tingel Tangel, He man trust on power dust, Frivolous, Jonas Olson feat. MC Tadpole and Boom Brothers at Postbahnhof.

Just beginning is the Wedding Dress #5, which will bring fashion shows and live music to even two stages at Berlin’s North. On Saturday Kissogram, Pitchtuner, Shir Khan and Schowi, among others, will brighten up the circus.

On the second and last day of Wedding Dress Gachette of the Mastiff will have the honour to close the big fashion circle once again, after opening it themselves on Tuesday at the Stadtbad. They will get accompanied by Swedish duo To All My Friends and Emil Doesn’t Drive.

Live: Gomma Super Show (Berlin)

12:21 PM

There has always been a bit of competition in the air, when Berlin and Munich did come together. But if you would aks, who our favourite people from this Bavarian gomorra are, we would immediately refer to Jonas “Telonius” Imbery, Matthias “Munk” Modica and their Gomma label – with sparkling eyes! Starting the second wave of Teutonian disco revolution coming from the river Isar some years ago, the duo has consequently refreshed the global dancefloors and have single-handedly put Minga (how Munich is called by its inhabitants) back on the map. Their sound is not only a playful update of the huge Giorgio Moroder disco heritage, but a mixture of it with well-selected psychedelia and a few good club lessons taught by the 90ies house and modern club scene.

But their biggest trump and strength is the diversity of Gomma’s artist roster, which is to be showcased once again this Friday at Berliner’s Ritter Butzke, when a massive Gomma Super Show will take the German capital by storm.

Here we have the New York octet-collective Phenomenal Handclap Band, with all their proto-disco-60ies-rock’n’roll and a note of soul, meeting not only the two label founders, of whom Munk just released another great and stylish single called “La Musica”, but Milan’s Gomma junior Cecile, who will play a live set(!).

Furthermore Moullinex will introduce their new, vibrant and rightly titled disco smasher “Superman” to the crowd. Line-up gets then completed by Munich Manuel Kim, who’s the label manager, our Berlin favourite Hugo Capapblanca and the VICE dj team Nic Jagger & DLK, whose magazine is presenting this nightout.

PS: Attention, Paris! On Saturday Gomma will bring the complete show (except Hugo and the VICE djs, but plus special guests) to your Social Club. So be there!

PS2: Find a new Munk mixtape here.

Bananamania / Los Massieras

12:30 PM

Oh you dear foolish little Berlin! Are you still hibernating? Come on, wake up! Where are all your Facebook states saying “I can’t wait to dance my shoes of tonight to Los Massieras” or your Tweets telling us that you’re “going to sweat and boogie like I’ve never boogied before!!” (check, yes, that’s less than 140 characters). Don’t you know what you are going to miss?

Tonight one of our favourite DJs and Spanish-in-Berlin-exile Hugo Capablanca (on the right) will celebrate the release of his new band project Los Massieras, together with a rather nice and well talented producer, who’s continuously changing is name, so it doesn’t really make sense to drop it here, but let’s call him David Ducaruge from now on.

Los Massieras will play tonight for the first time ever live at the Tausend Bar, Berlin, a scene hot spot with Mr C as resident DJ, presenting their new fantastic debut record Boogity Boogity Boogity released on Capapblanca’s own new imprint Bananamania, distributed by Discoteca Oceano and Clone. The title track is a totally classic, but timeless disco super anthem directly taking over your hips and feet forcing you into a rousing, wild… well… boogie. It’s an almost terrifyingly vibrant recording squeezing a perfect nightout into 4:50 minutes, wasting not a single second / bit of it.

But after a short break we go on further: you might could have guessed from the label’s name, that Los Massieras are promoting a special kind of a tutti-frutti disco cult dedicated to crooked, yellow fruits. And yes, when the second track’s title is the same phrase, it pretty much says it all. Expect some nice disco comedy from it featuring funny Q&As like this one, “Q: Who’s your favourite actor? A: John Bananolta!” That’s priceless.

And finally we have “Shroom Heaven”, a pretty psychedelic tune giving you an idea of how The Velvet Underground would have sound, if they had been a disco outfit while recording “Heroine” and getting high with Andy Warhol (oh no, it’s the almighty banana again!)

All in all a great package, which needs to be celebrated. Tonight! Everywhere! Listen to and download “Boogity Boogity Boogity” here. Our check out the whole package on their Myspace page and their blog for some joyful, free mixtapes.

Bottin hits Berlin

11:18 PM

Signor Bottin all over Berlin! The Venice disco darling is in town to play three sets within just six days. Starting on Friday night, January 8, at Tausend together with one of our absolute Berlin favourites Hugo Capablanca, followed by a Retro Futoro at HBC the next day, where Bottin will meet – among others – Kruton, Gu Mascio, and another Berlin favourite of ours, Emil Doesn’t Drive. Hoping that he’s not already bored of our city il signore will conclude his Berlin trip on Thursday, January 14, at Cookies.

Born in 1977 – the year when teens around the globe dreamed about hanging around with Giorgio Moroder and taking cocaine to Cerrone’s “Supernature” in the newly openend Studio54 – Bottin has been a time traveller for his whole life building bridges between the good old disco era and presence with some fantastic releases on cherished Italians Do It Better!, Bear Funk and more. He’s remixing the likes of both, In Flagranti and legendary Space, is putting together some really tasteful mixtapes and did even deejay in the Ukraine recently.

To get a clue of his skills give the following great “When you’re in need of a Bottin” – his re-edit of  “When you’re In need of love” by Raydio, Ray Parker Jr.’s former band before the very started making stuff like “Ghostbusters” – a listen. Bravo signor Bottin!

Barcadi Island (ab 3.9.) – 05.09.09 – Berlin

01:10 PM

If a rum producer from the Bermudas wants to make your end of summer (and to advertize his products) you should grab that chance. Especially if they even fly Bonde Do Role and Thunderheist over the Atlantic just for you. And in case you don’t this young fella called Afrikan Boy yet you have to go there anyway. No excuses.
