Is Tropical x Tweak Bird x Berlin

07:25 PM

There wasn’t much known about the three guys from Is Tropical, before they visited Berlin to play at Comet Club on Friday the 15th. And apart from a first single it was hitherto only a deal with Kitsuné and the fact, that they keep hiding their faces with bandanas, which attracted proper attention.

But the pleasure of opening the evening was on the side of Berlin’s I’m not a Band. And the two enchanted the few people who found their way to Comet Club. Lacking of an album release as well, I’m not a Band played their set sovereignly, but not boredly. The delay of Is Tropical couldn’t confuse them, too. So they played encore by encore, collecting plus point.

The headliner of the evening then entered the stage with a big delay. Without a word of explanation to the waiting crowd but with their bandanas on, the three started their gig. The ones who didn’t pay attention to the sound-check could see the face of Is Tropical’s drummer nonetheless because his bandana got lost as fast as the whole band’s enthusiasm.

One hour later and at a different venue Tweak Bird was supposed to be more thrilling. All those who brought along their earmuffs to the sold out West Germany were well-advised to do so, since the powerful drums and the hardcore guitars sounds got some long-grown hair to swing. Though, the good set lost some of its substance and creativity towards the end, because the Bird brothers kept maltreating the four very same chords over and over again.

We recommend : Is Tropical (win tickets)

When it comes to British people and their everyday affectations, there certainly two quite odd among them. One’s is about the sea, despite all the dirty, grey beaches and the shitty weather, the other’s about hypes, despite the traditional tea-time cosiness. And apparently both meet in newcomer act Is Tropical, whether wilfully or not.

Although the Londoner’s waive old shanties, they do sing about things like mutiny and even their name promises the sight of far away beauties, while their refreshingly mixed music appears to be forearmed for every possible wave to break over their little ship. As career mentors and catalyst medium, French Kitsuné label lends them their support, while the three protagonists themselves again prefer to keep their faces out of public limelight.

Is Tropical : Seasick Mutiny (live at Field Day 2010, Video)

With a debut album to follow in early 2011, the video for the first single “South Pacific” – out on Kitsuné on November 8 – was released today, showing the band and some girls in a three-and-a-half-minute long tale of (band-) faceless, adolescent rebellion and seafaring. Watch it here.

In Berlin, where Is Tropical will kick off there next tour at Comet Club tomorrow, warming-up for supporting  ihre Tour Mystery Jets in the UK and LCD Soundsystem in France (all dates below), they’ll be accompanied by local duo I’m Not A Band. They again combine with a violin a classic instrument with electronic music, though without evoking any clichés, being neither kitsch nor too dodgy. Even a Simian Mobile Cover is an easy task for them.

We’ve still 1×2 guest list invites to the Berling gig here for you. Leave us a comment here or at Facebook by tomorrow noon to enter the competition. Winners will be chosen random so good luck to all of you!
