Hurricane Festival 2010

12:50 PM

It seems that the booking team of the Hurricane Festival, taking place from June 18 to 20 at Scheeßel, Germany, have done their homework. While many festivals start to announce the first bands during the last weeks, the organisators of the Hurricane have already presented a lot of bands since the beginning of 2010.

Looking at the accredited bands you’ll recognize the variety of musical genres: they range from alternative-rock over electro music to soft synthie- and guitar pop. But most of the bands have one similarity: they played a sold out concert in germany last year. Consequently the hosts can be sure that the festival would be sold out, too. On the other hand, there is also an adavantage for the fans: Those who could not see the concert of their favourite bands have new chance to watch them.

Definitely, The Strokes are the first highlight of the line up list. Already last year the New Yorkers announced a new album for late 2010, but disappointed many fans because the members applied themselves to their solo projects. Fortunately now the fans don’t have to wait any longer. The band works currently on their new record and will surely present some new songs at the Hurricane.  Of course we hope that the performance will be as powerful as in 2006, when Julian Casablancas destroyed a camera on the stage (watch below from 0:52 min on).

Another crowd puller are the Beatsteaks. The German rock band will return on stage this summer. Additionally, the re-united Stone Temple Pilots will perform at the festival. And because we are talking about well-tried bands you can mention that more war horses of the music business are going to play: electro-punker The Prodigy, the two trip hop bands Faithless and Massive Attack, riot-Hamburger Deichkind and Sweden-combo Mando Diao. In contrast to the electric and heavy bands Jack Johnson, who’s been acting in the music business for a long time as well, appears almost like an alien element. Likewise German band Element of Crime is still running on adrenalin and must not miss at any festival today. As always Sven Regner and his band will guarantee a big portion of romanticism.

If you look a little bit down the line-up list, you will find many newcomer of the last year and the music is getting a bit softer and calmer. On of the rediscovery of the last year is The XX. The London three-piece does inspire many people with their melancholic synthie tunes and recently played even three sold out concerts in Berlin. Phoenix, post punk band White Lies, wonder women Florence and the Machine and La Roux with her sweet-pop represent further newcomer band at Hurricane. The boys of Two Door Cinema Club, who will release their second album soon, are a current insiders’ tip. Furthermore the Shout Out Louds will present their new album Work at the festival. Too, Boys Noize and Does it offend you, yeah? will guarantee strong electric tunes and German Audiolith Label is involved with Frittenbude.

The three-day tickets for the festival in Scheeßel cost € 120. Those who will arrive with a caravan have to pay additional € 20 for a camper badge. You can find further information on the festival-website.

If you live in the South of Germany you can visit Hurricane’s sister festival, the Southside Festival, in Neuhausen ob Eck. It takes place at the same weekend and has the identical line-up.

UPDATE: Today the Hurricane promoters confirmed more bands once again. And they couldn’t have been more different at all. On the one hand there’re Vampire Weekend. The New Yorkers provide a mix from pop, alternative and African rhythms for a big good mood soundtrack with their current and second album Contra. Bonaparte and Timid Tiger will also be out for as much fun. The boys of We Are Scientists present a considerably more like rock sounding music and with the Deftones for rather harder minds and Ska legends The Specials, the Huricane bookers have brought another two warhorses of the music business on board.

UPDATE 2: There will be a new stage at the this year. Until now Mr. Oizo, The Bloody Beetroots Deathcrew 77, Erol Alkan, Bratze and FM Belfast comfirmed their live performances. Besides the festival promoters announced some further acts, f.i. Biffy Clyro, for the other stages. You can find the complete line-up below.

Vampire Weekend: Live in Berlin

01:03 PM

When you wanted to work-out with some movement against the winterly coldness on the last friday evening, Berlin’s Astra was the perfekt place to go to. Because Vampire Weekend had been inviting for a dance and many music lovers followed their request.

Beside their new longplayer Contra they brought along a great temper on tour. Already at the beginning of the evening they had been putting all on athletic peak perfomance – with their indiepop and afrobeat sounds – who were not drenched in sweat amid the densely packed crowd so far.  Every single exact drawn and crystal clear written song had the potential to be a hymn, but one couldn’t get rid of the feeling they have been using their pop pattern a little bit to often. Although your can discover some ska influenses beside the African ones already mentioned, the audience refused the request of singer Ezra Koenig to do some pogo. Very polite, as he noted later.

Vampire Weekend “Giving Up the Gun”

11:52 AM

When an “indie” rock band scores it first #1 album in the US Billboard Charts and wants to make for another (probable) hit single, they barely can pick a better team for directing it as Emmett and Brendan Malloy, who rank Sheryl Crow and the Jonas Brothers among their costumers as well as Oasis, Wolfmother and the White Stripes. Well, Vampire Weekend‘s recent full-length Contra indeed reached the pole position and so they and the Malloy brothers invited a little superstar line-up including Hollywood actor Jake Gyllenhaal, Wu-Tang Clan member Robert “RZA” Diggs, Lil Jon and professional brother Joe Jonas to one of tennis history’s funniest moment since Andre Agassi’s hair (wig) and outfits during the early 1990ies.

But band buddy Jenny Murray, who appeared in the “Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa” video before, gives the boys a good on court hiding with magical help by a Mr. Jon, while Ezra Koenig is wearing a red bandanna. It’s all in all pretty weird and it’s their new video for the song “Giving Up the Gun”, so give it a look.

Contra was released via XL Recordings. See our photo gallery from VW’s recent gig in Berlin here.

New Vampire Weekend Single “Cousins”

06:58 PM

After “Horchata” – Vampire Weekend‘s recent free download from earlier this month -here comes the first, real new single named “Cousins” from the band‘s 2nd long player “Contra” to be released in January 2010. Another  African Beats influenced jam of course, but not exclusively.

With “Cousins” the trio sends some pretty some pretty uncommon sounds out in the ether, at least seen in their context. The previous African style slowly from “A-Punk” steps aside and gets replaced by some fast drums beats and guitars beaten by Ezra Koenig’s voice when it comes to competition.

So save your Christmas money for January and “Contra” hence both songs til now make a good and joyful preview. “Cousins” single will be out on December 15 through home label XL Records/Beggars. Here’s a fresh live shoot by MTV Canada for the beginning:

Only some months ago VM singer Ezra Koenig teamed up with The Very Best for fabulous pop anthem  “Warm Heart Of Africa“.

The Very Best: song & remixes for free

the very best

Some time ago we introduced you to The Very Best [Myspace] (Radioclit with Esau Mwamwaya). Nevertheless it’s still more than five painful weeks until their first record will be released on September the 4th. And I guess the less of you are living in the US so they could watch the trio on their first tour.

So we had to find another way to shorten the waiting time for you and found it by presenting you a very own download special around the song “Warm Heart Of Africa” taken straight from the album of the same title. Besides the wonderful original with Vampire Weekend’s Ezra Koenig, we have two remixes of the song done by Metronomy and  Architecture In Helsinki for you.

First ones gave it a new Disco-Funk-alike arragement in reward for Radioclit’s two flashing re-works of “Radio Ladio” (still avaible at Radioclit’s Myspace page). Architecture In Helsinki answered to Very Best’s sample of their “Heart It Races” in “Kamphopo” (featured on the The Very Best Mixtape) with an lovely relaxed instrumental mix. What a nice community.
